Marie Taglioni Fairy

Marie Taglioni as a fairy in the ballet , 'La Sylphide'.

One of the most prolific ballerinas featured in the young Princess’ collection is the Swedish born ballerina Marie Taglioni (1804-84). Marie Taglioni was one of the most celebrated romantic ballet dancers of the nineteenth century. She was known for her light, graceful style of dancing as well as her considerable talent for dancing en pointe.

Marie Taglioni

Princess Victoria was a big admirer of Taglioni and attended her many performances after which she would draw the costume in her sketch book and then costumed the dolls in her likeness.

Victoria’s hand-drawn sketch of Marie Taglioni in ‘La Sylphide’.

After watching Taglioni in the ballet ‘La Sylphide’, Princess Victoria described in her journal how "when she bounds and skips along the stage it is quite beautiful. Quite like a fawn. And she has grace in every action". La Sylphide, which premiered in Paris is 1832, was choreographed by Marie Taglioni's father, Filippo Taglioni.

Designed as a showcase for Taglioni's talent, it is credited with being the first ballet where dancing en pointe had an aesthetic rationale.

Our rendition of the Marie Taglioni fairy features fairy wings decorated with German glass glitter, a whisper light silk organza trimmed with gold thread, painted ballerina slippers and added organza wing decorations on her puff sleeves.
