Alice, the Countess of Rothesay

Since half of the dolls in the young Princess’ Collection are courtiers named after people in Kensington palace that perhaps were friends of the princess or historic figures, it is no surprise that the courtiers would not be complete without a Countess of Rothesay. The Princess named the future heir to the throne, Alice. She is featured in this sketch from the book “Queen Victoria’s Dolls” by Frances Low, holding her two adorable twin babies.

The title the Count and Countess of Rothesay is an official title of succession used only in Scotland for the heir apparent to the throne. Queen Victoria mandated the title be used to refer to her oldest son and the heir apparent when in Scotland. Since then, the usage has continued. When in England, the official title reverts back to the more commonly known title, Prince and Princess of Wales.

The Countess is dressed in 100% top quality Swiss organdy in a golden hue and a taupe colored silk satin Chiffon bodice. She wears a Czech glass bead necklace and the same Czech glass beads earrings. Although the original doll was not adorned with such extras, we took the liberty to elevate the elegance befitting of her title.

Our rendition of the Countess measures 6 3/4” inches tall and is dressed in the classic simple elegance as befits British royalty. The original Countess of Rothesay in the collection was dressed by the young Princess.

The Countess is fully jointed and is made in a limited edition of 50.

Since each doll is hand painted, there will be small variations in each doll.

Each doll is signed “C.S. Carver” for Charles Stuart Carver, the artist, and comes in its own decorated box with a laser engraved certificate of authenticity.

Our workshop continues humming along as we create more wooden dolls for UFDC. If you are attending UFDC this summer, we are doing a luncheon where we will present a fully wooden Miss Unity doll in honor of UFDC’s 75th anniversary. A very dashing male companion will also be available for purchase.

Also, we could not leave our beautiful 12 inch Emma without a proper mate, so, Mr. Knightley is in the works and will be available at the convention this summer.
